For Leonard

Like ages of weightless snow
on tiny oceans filled with light
her eyelids enclose deeply
a shade tree of birthday candles
one for every morning
until the now of sleeping

Growing up, poetry, whether in song or book, lent its hand, its ear and its shoulder to my unhinged adolescent emotions. It has been a teacher and a friend – a place of comfort. The words Leonard Cohen has given to the world have been amongst the most beautiful and memorable to me. Beyond Halleluja, poems like Bird On The Wire, Anthem, I’m You’re Man, and Dance Me To The End of Love have and will continue to enchant my soul.

Leonard, your soul will live on through word and song. It will continue to penetrate the darkness, because the crack you speak of will burst with your light.
